There are more virtual worlds than you think and many of them are arguably more important for the future of virtual worlds than Second Life, the current headline grabber.
I was recently doing research for a presentation that included brands in Second Life and came across the following usage statistics of virtual worlds.
The important thing to keep in mind when reading the graph is that those at the top are simple virtual worlds designed for young children. As you move down the graph the worlds become more elaborate and the users older. Red Light Center ushers in the adult orientated virtual worlds.
So kids are growing up comfortable with avatars and experiencing virtual worlds. There is also a natural progression path in virtual worlds as they grow older. Gives credibility to the prediction by Gartner Consulting that by 2011, 80% of active Internet users will have an avatar.
