The strategic brand consulting arena in South Africa is expanding with the announcement that BBDO Consulting is setting up shop in the country bringing to about half-a-dozen the number of such firms, including Sagacite Brand Agency where I am a partner.
The press release announcing BBDO Consulting’s arrival is all management speak and clearly states that they are adopting a fact-and-figure approach to brands. Not surprisingly they are aligning their operation with BBDO’s highly-successful and respected creative operation in South Africa.
Most, if not all, of the firms that I consider genuine strategic brand consultancies have ties of various strength with creative agencies in the country, thereby staking their claim in the expanding overlap between the worlds of marketing service firms and management consultancies.
And yet many players in both camps ignore this overlap as something that a) doesn’t exist or b) doesn’t impact on them. I am not sure the wake-up call can be made any louder.
